Addressing Substance Abuse in the Workplace

Location: Zoom details to follow

Date: January 20, 2022, 12:00 – 1:30

Recognizing that construction, trades, and transport industries are disproportionately represented among overdose deaths, the Vancouver Island Construction Association (VICA) in partnership with Island Health, has developed a new harm reduction project, the Tailgate Toolkit.

As the Program Lead for the Tailgate Toolkit, Colby Young has worked, with the support of the VICA team, to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and promote help seeking within our Industry. His strength-based approach to this project looks to build upon the skills and capacity of our industry, teams, and leaders.

Colby has received a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) and a Diploma in Public Sector Management (DPSM) from the University of Victoria. Prior to his work within the construction industry, Colby supported members of his community experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and addiction.

In this presentation, Colby will outline his approach to reaching out and providing support to our colleagues struggling with substance use. This will include topics such as: substance use and our industry, harm reduction,  when and where to address substance use, providing support, and next steps.
